First November

Let’s see where we’re at so far!

Successes

  • Identified 270+ plants
  • Added new native shade beds
  • Grew Thai chili peppers, leutshauer paprika peppers, cushaw pumpkin, asparagus, sugar snap peas, beets, cherry tomatoes, Italian heirloom tomatoes, blackberries, raspberries and cherries

Things I’ll try again

  • Dividing hostas (missed the fall timeframe)
  • Testing and amending the soil for blueberries
  • Fertilizing blueberries (earlier in spring this time)
  • Harvesting rhubarb (yep, totally missed it)
  • Pruning grapes (I chickened out and didn’t do it last spring)
  • Pulling poison ivy and bindweed

Things I won’t try again

  • Growing ground cherries–no sense in it if I don’t eat them
  • Frying green tomatoes–yuck!
  • Baking a pumpkin pie–not worth the effort
  • Letting weeds grow taller than I am (I’m talking to you, pokeweed, burnweed, and spiny amaranth)
  • Fancy colored tomatoes (ok maybe someday, but I don’t really love tomatoes and if they don’t turn red I can’t tell if they’re ripe)

Seeds I’ve saved (though, what to do with so many?)

  • American Germander
  • Anise hyssop
  • Basil and Thai basil
  • Bluebill clematis and fancy clematis
  • Blue false indigo
  • Cardinal flower
  • Foxglove beardtongue
  • Honeyvine
  • Ox-eye false sunflower
  • Orange coneflower
  • Purple coneflower
  • Purple, pink and blue morning glory
  • Northern sea oats
  • Swamp rose mallow
  • Zinnia
