Invasive Plants
The Missouri Department of Conservation asks that we remove invasive species, so we’ll start with their recommendations.
- Japanese Honeysuckle (reduce/manage): This one belongs to the neighbors and I honestly adore it, but I can cut back what’s on our side of the fence.
- Wintercreeper (reduce/manage): This will not be pleasant to take out from where it’s growing under the fort, and I can’t imagine anything will take its place. But, I’ll remove as much of it as I can.
- Johnson Grass (remove): If I can find it back, I’ll take it out
- Yellow Sweet Clover (remove): If I can find it back, I’ll take it out
- Tree of Heaven (remove): Lots of these; working on pulling/cutting them out
- Himalayan Blackberry (remove): PictureThis alternates between identifying our blackberries as Himalayan or Allegheny. Do we have some of each? Follow up on this, and remove the Himalayan variety if so.
- Chinese Wisteria (keep): Wisteria is central to our garden and among my favorites. The site shows insufficient data about its impact, so I’ll take that as a license to continue enjoying this one!
Then, mipn.org has a few more that we’ll work on removing:
- Velvetleaf
- Silk Tree
- Carelessweed (Palmer amaranth)
- Mugwort
- Corn gromwell
- Lamb’s quarters
- Asiatic Dayflower
- Field bindweed
And some we’ll keep anyway:
- Wild Garlic
- Porcelain berry
- Creeping Charlie (ground ivy)
Nuisance Plants
These just need to go regardless.
- Poison Ivy (remove)
- Spiny Amaranth (remove)
Extra Plants
These are fine but they’re exotic; could cut back but only if we have natives to fill in.
- Chinese Silver Grass (Zebra Grass)
- Hosta
