First September

What I’ve learned so far

  • Bindweed and morning glory quickly grow out of control and smother everything. Need to pull them early and often. Make an intentional space for the morning glory, since it’s nice, but where?
  • Mulch would be a great idea
  • Fertilize the blueberries before April, mulch them and keep the weeds out of their space
  • Prune the peach trees freely… They’re dying anyway
  • The raised bed that’s partially shaded by the peach tree is one I’ll never bother to water. Plant things there that like it dry.
  • Don’t need more than a couple tomato plants–they produce a lot! Might stick with Italian heirloom and the cherry tomato volunteers, since those did so well.
  • Cayenne pepper is king. So many peppers, and again just one plant. Is it the variety or the location? None of the other peppers fared nearly so well.
  • Prune to keep things walkable
  • Don’t walk out the door without a tool
  • Could definitely use some raised bed space for a pollinator garden. There’s plenty!
  • Use the space back by the cherry trees for something…
  • Need to get in the habit of cleaning up in front by the sidewalk so it’s nice
  • When testing to see if seeds are good, just try a few. I give seedlings better care if there aren’t too many.
  • When taking cuttings, take a lot and put several in each pot. I guess. Haven’t succeeded in growing any yet. Think I need to put a bag over them and keep them by a window in the guest bedroom.

Next steps

Pick up more dirt. Cover new grassy area with cardboard and about 10 bags’ worth

Divide the hostas

Try more cuttings

Get mulch for winter

Get my indoor greenhouse area ready

Plant fall herbs in the raised planter: parsley, cilantro, lemongrass, chervil, tarragon, oregano

Store pots in the raised planter for winter? Could plant seeds in them that need to cold stratify, or do that in a raised bed, or try both
